Yup, ice.
Ice is one of those very rare substances that expands when it solidifies -- in other words, ice floats on water. Almost all other solid substances sink when placed in a container of their liquid form. If ice sank, it would go to the bottom of the ocean and never melt again; and so, every winter, more and more ice would accumulate, until finally the entire world would freeze over and life would be impossible.
If not for this one, extremely rare fact of science -- ice floats -- life would be impossible. Ice expands, both when it freezes and when it converts to its gaseous state. How is it that the one thing all life needs to survive just happens to act differently than everything else?
