Candyce's Best Birthday

Being the only girl in a house of boys hadn't been easy. Candyce lost her mom when she was young, right after Andrew was born. Probably one of the reasons she bonded to Tara so quickly - kindred soul and all that. Andrew and Tucker didn't mind of course, but Candyce missed her mom. She missed the small touches around the house. She missed her during the holidays. She especially missed her during her birthday.
It's not that her dad didn't care. He was always very loving, but he just didn't remember birthdays and such. Candyce had tried to keep her expectations low, but it didn't stop her from being hurt every year when her birthday came along.
This, her second year at college though, this birthday was different. She had Tara, her new roommate. Tara had decorated the room, made her a cake, brought her balloons, and even left a rose on her pillow.
Candyce wanted to cry. She wanted to hug Tara until stuffing came out of her. Instead she settled for a thank you card written straight from her heart.
Candyce knew it still hurt that her dad didn't remember her birthday or that her crazy brothers mentioned it a week late, but all that mattered right now is that she was loved. Tara had given her the best birthday ever.
