Archiving and Preserving

I am at the beginning of a project of archiving and preserving family photo memories from my childhood and before (even into my parents' childhoods). My first focus is finding and ordering reasonably priced, acid-free and archival safe storage boxes and envelopes. Even this is turning out to be quite a task, as the things I'd most like to get are

If you have that many slides, it might be more cost effective to buy a used slide/negative scanner. It might pay for itself. And if you buy it used, you can always resell it on eBay when you are done with it for about what you paid for it.

I've been thinking about a scanner myself. The trouble is, I need a medium format one, and those cost $$$.
