tutorial ✩ daenerys

Hi guys! monstersinyou requested a tut for one of my game of thrones icons and so here it is! :D
Please let me know if something is unclear or if there is something that is... uh... impossible to understand because of mistakes/weird syntax/whatever makes it impossible to understand ♥
Okay, so, this tutorial will be on this icon:

First of all, we need to find the right cap. Okay, no. You can actually use whichever cap you want or like. I chose this one because I liked how the main focus was on her face and it had an "empty" background - no trees, no people, nothing but dirt. Anyway, you can do this with any cap, really. So, first things first, I cut the cap. I usually make my icons on a 100x100px canvas and this is no exception; I tried making some on bigger canvases, but I didn't like the outcome. Back on track, I cut the cap.

And now we start with steps, yay!

1. On a new layer I roughly painted the background with a light brown/beige (with a hard rounded brush). If I had to do it now, I would probably add a solid color fill layer and then mask away the color where not needed, but the outcome is the same. Well, maybe with a fill layer and a mask it would be cleaner. Oh, well.

2. I added a new layer with a gradient from the same light brown/beige (#a69880) to transparent, 128.66 degrees, and masked what covered Dany.

3. Same as above, new layer, gradient from light brown to transparent, -33.69 degrees, masked over Dany.

As you can imagine, if I had used a color fill layer on step one, step two and three wouldn't have been necessary. Ahah... ah.

4. I copied all the visible layers and merged them on a new layer, and set that on screen, opacity at 70%.

5. I duplicated the screen layer and set it on soft light, keeping the opacity at 70%.

From step five until new notice I worked between the screen and soft light layer! This way I feel the icon has more depth.

6. I added a new brown (#956939) layer and set it on soft light, opacity 80%.

7. Fill layer again, this time with a light violet (#8a95c2) on soft light, opacity 100%.

8. I added this texture by kitamikeita, flipped it horizontally and set it on soft light, 50%.

9. I added this texture by midnight-road, turned it black and white, auto-contrasted it and set it on soft light, 100%.

10. I added this texture and set it on soft light, 50%. I'm sorry but I honestly can't remember who made the texture and can't seem to find it on my hd. If you know who made it, could you please let me know?

11. Final step of the coloring, I added a gradient map layer with a gradient from #38302b to #cebca5 and set it on soft light, 50%.

Okay, now I'm dome working below the soft light layer of step five.

12. Once again I copied all the visible layers and merged them on a new layer. Aaaaand I went to imagine > auto-contrast. Yep, that's it.

13. Again, copy all the visible layers, merge them on a new one. Yep, I tend to do it a lot. Now even more than when I made this icon XP but, back to the steps! On the merged layer I smoothed the skin with the blur tool and a soft round brush.

14. Final touch, some topaz. I can't remember the settings, though D: it was very soft/blurry. I tried to replicate it and the nearest I got is with these settings - clean: strength 0, threshold 1.50, radius 12; edges: accent 3, radius 1.30, sharpness 0.15; texture: texture 0.55, boost 0.85, size 0.80.

original VS replica

15. And now, sharpening! For this icon I used advanced sharpening with these settings (I'm sorry, I have no idea how this translates in English D: "raggio" is radius and "controllo sfocatura" is gaussian blur, but I don't know what "fattore" is. Threshold, maybe?)

Et voilà, the icon is done! :D As you can see it is not difficult at all.
I hope this tut can be useful and idk, let me know if you have any question?
Thanks for reading ♥ bye!
