...That SPN bigbang thing

The story, the excerpts of it I've read, isn't new to me with regard to the racist tropes. The writer of that particular story is showing what she's learned about Haiti, and blacks, and victims of certain disasters that are mostly poc. I hate the story. I consider it vile. But in many ways, it's a typical example of what creative white racists do ( Read more... )

Eh, you know. It's bad, but it's expected. Those white folks feigning shock? Always feign shock. It's a requirement, right? To prove that they're not racist like she is.

It's like by feigning shock they're comforting themselves they're not Klan. To (sorta) pull from brightfame, maybe some of them are sincere, but there's obvious desperation too.

It's a catch-22. Either they're sincere, which means they're so blindly naive they make my teeth hurt, or they're so cynical they feel they must pretend to be shocked and outraged.

Nice to know.

I've been reading fanfic for a long time and really, it doesn't get to me anymore.

How long is that?

I'm reading a lot of the comments and I wonder if people would have felt better if the story was about events that happened after 9/11?

I really hope not.

In that case they're not using PoC but I'm a New Yorker and that story probably would have offended me, so I really don't know what the solution is.

They SHOULD be using PoC if it's set in New York. Unless they're Warner Bros producing friends, that is.

I should have said reading fanfic online, and that would be since 1995.

What's wrong with this story is once, again, using PoC as props. Put it this way. Say you're a doctor in Haiti after the earthquake. Now the last thing you'll want is romance. So, IMO, maybe the story should, if it was to be set there, have been about two doctors helping the PEOPLE in Haiti and maybe how their initial prejudices are smashed by what they see there. But have the Haitian people as REAL PEOPLE. How do you do that? Research the language, the culture and if you can't do that, then change the setting.

One thing I really don't like is having a disaster as a backdrop for romance, even though it sort of happened to me, (it wasn't disaster but working with infants with HIV) the romance didn't happen until AFTER. So the image of two guys making out in the middle of an earthquake doesn't sit well with me.

There are ways to write stories about Haiti, and write it well, I'm sure. But making it the backdrop for White Men Angst and Sexing ain't it to begin with, I'm equally sure.

Someone pointed me to that thing yesterday, and I was squicked just seeing the artwork, as it was using actual images from the earthquake. I think someone did the math that the author had to have started writing that thing like instantly after the earthquake. There's too soon and there's THAT.

And now I see from the quotes is full of the sort of patronising, vile racism that so many seem to think isn't racism because it's not meant to be racist, see? Twice the fail for the prize of one, I guess.

Actually, might have to count it three just for the cat. What the HELL author.

Tragi-porn. :(

*nods* It is indeed.

Oh, the humanity.

Post the long comment. Because it's entirely true. We live in white supremacist culture. Our media feeds us images which support that. Of course this will come out in fiction"

Thanks. I've posted variations of it around. Hopefully it's not redundant. I'm hoping that anyone who's caught up with that nonsense will take a look at what happened and NOT pretend they could never do what gatorgrrrl did.
