The story really captures Vader's descent into utter resignantion and apathy over the course of twenty years. And all through it he knows that he was manipulated and is very aware of what he lost. The line about him not caring that Padme' betrayed him if only she'd come lie with him again was especially touching.
Of course, there were lots of little gems like that: the very visceral description of Palpatine drinking brandy, Vader's nightmare of the Sith-child, the comfort of Luke's physical support. It's all very vividly described and makes you feel like you're standing with them.
The use of color as a symbol for life was very effective, especially the part about Vader's full-color dreams vs. his monochromatic reality.
Great story - thank you for writing it for me! And I appreciate the restraint it took for you to say that Vader hadn't touched Palpatine in twenty years ;)

I'm so glad it struck a chord with you. I had wondered if the drinking thing would be a bit much, since he apparently can still drink by the mouth, but it certainly doesn't seem like an ordeal he would go through often. And he certainly couldn't casually sit around drinking like Palpatine was.
And HEEEEE - my "inner Palpatine" (the fluffy one) cringes at this whole thing, but especially the part about them not having physical contact for 20 years. XD

The phrasing is so clean and simple that it stuck me that much harder, like an arrow to the heart.
