This was lovely and I very much like the idea of choosing who gave the tree and gift to Spike.

I think it was...Xander. The tree reminded him of the sad little tree from A Charlie Brown Christmas, he saw it and simply had to save it but then what to do with it. So he gave it to Spike along with a copy of the movie all wrapped up underneath.
