Think about it, the environment doesn't need us to save it(such train of thought is extremely egocentric), rather, it is humanity that needs to be saved. Remember, earth already survived a drastic global climate change(known as the Ice Age) and could easily survive another one. The question is, can we?
I think if people like Al Gore asked everyone to rally to save ourselves by being less wasteful, less people would doubt and more would actually act.

oh, and i'm sure you already knew this, but just in case, unplugging chargers saves energy (cellphone, laptop, camera, etc - common student amenities).
