House or Apartment mike5816 November 1 2011, 00:23:50 UTC
We've rented both.

Houses:
* PRO: no noisy neighbors tromping on your ceiling and taking your parking spot.
* CON: generally more expensive, and a lot more stuff to to keep up with, including yardwork

Apartments:
* PRO: generally more affordable, many options, easy to deal with, easier to terminate leases
* CON: noisy neighbors tromping on your ceiling and taking your parking spot.

If you go for an apartment, which is usually the best way to go for your first-time-on-your-own experience (I can't recall anyone moving directly into a house unless there are like 5-10 other roommates) make sure you get one that has its own laundry facilities. Having to use a common laundry room is capital-T Trouble (in more ways than one). Also, nowadays it's common to have credit and background checks done for rentals, so who knows what you might be approved for (either house or apartment.)
