Been very busy with school stuff lately. We had two tests week before last, both of which were OK considering how little I studied for either. This past week we had an assignment on bovine obstetrics due, which was reasonably interesting but time-consuming. I read about it on Wikipedia. Can you explain why it is apparently only used for dogs? Does it do different things to dogs as opposed to other mammals? Except in Japan, where apparently humans can also get it? Is it just because it takes longer for human drugs to be approved in the US? But if that's the case, why isn't it also for horses and goats and cats and things?

It's only licensed for use in dogs because the licensing process is long and requires lots of research, and nearly all the research has been done in either humans or dogs. You can use drugs off-license in veterinary medicine though, ie. use them for species for which they have not officially been approved; you just do so at your own risk as it were ( ... )
