Darwin's Black Box

I've recently begun reading this book by Michael Behe, as I feel that it's slightly imperative that I become familiar with things that at heart I disagree with, mainly because if I'm wrong, I want to know it - but also, so that I have a leg to stand on in intelligent debates (rather then wagging my finger and going "nu-uh!" which is precisely why I ( Read more... )

We can't go lower than molecules? What. He must have slept through chem class AND physics. I hated both and wasn't much good at either, and even I got a working knowledge of atoms and particles as a high school student. Way to demonstrate that people who don't "believe" in evolution are working from a poor understanding of scientific principles, Behe. D'oh!

I admire you for slogging through this nonsense, though! You have more patience than I will ever possess.

It surprises me really, because, as far as I can tell he is a very competent biochemist, and he DOES understand about atoms and particles and the like, but he is assuming that "lower we cannot go"? Which is just incredibly naive to me. Centuries ago they thought the same thing, which he is quick to put out as having been an error in judgment, but hindsight is 20-20, yes? I don't think we can ever know for sure how low it can all go.

It gets my blood up, which is a good thing ;-)

I was going to ask, do you think he really believes this or is he writing as a tool of the anti-science movement for reasons of his own? And then I thought I was being too paranoid. But a biochemist must know better.....

One would think. I honestly think that he believes what he is writing, since he doesn't seem anti-science per se, he just, ultimately, believes in Intelligent Design and not Evolution as being the method and/or reason for the existence of life.

The fact that he can have so much knowledge and miss the irony of the statements he is putting forth is just amazing to me, though.
