'DRESDEN FILES' IN DANGER?
Rescue effort underway to save one of Sci Fi Channel's better shows
THE SKINNY: Fans of the Sci Fi Channel series THE DRESDEN FILES are hoping to save it from extinction, and are calling on other fans to help.
Adapted from the novel series written by Jim Butcher (the ninth volume was released a few months ago), DRESDEN is about a private investigator (Paul Blackthorne) with a talent for wizardry who helps the Chicago polices solve supernatural crimes.
Reviews have been generally good, with many likening it to a cross between X-FILES and a grown up
Harry Potter, and most note the solid acting and intelligent writing. In ratings for the key 18-49 demographic, it has ranked just behind the network’s powerhouse BATTLESTAR GALACTICA - which is especially good when one considers that
Sci Fi runs the show in the highly competitive Sunday night time slot. Despite this, the network seems somehow unsupportive, and now that the show is up for renewal for a second season, sources indicate that network execs are leaning toward canceling it. Meanwhile, they’re planning to broadcast some sort of live wrestling show on Tuesday nights.
Well, I guess professional wrestling is more at home on a
science fiction & fantasy network than on a sports network. But if that’s an indication of the braintrust in charge of Sci Fi Channel these days, we can be thankful they haven’t turned it into a cross between E! and HSN.
In any case, rather than try to copy the JERICHO campaign and send the network execs teabags or candy canes or something else silly, DRESDEN fans have been taking a mature approach and have launched a letter writing and phone campaign in support of the show. You can get a lot more details
here, and tell ‘em iF sent ya.

Dresden fans campaign to save their show

Other Science Fiction Shows,
Programming With so many different campaigns going to save shows recently it could almost be a weekly feature here, and here is yet another for you to consider. I bring this one up partly out of a selfish desire to see it succeed, because The Dresden Files has become my second favorite Sci Fi Original, but also because I think it actually has a shot at working.
There is a bunch of helpful info over at the group's
main site. They have a letter writing campaign where if you email your letter to Dresden fan Belynda she will print it out and mail it for you, email and phone contact info for Sci Fi, links to a petition, and a host of other options for you to help out.
If you just happened to miss the show when it originally aired you can get all 12 of the episodes through
iTunes and there is a nice selection of behind the scenes stuff over at the official
Dresden site on scifi.com. The first, hopefully of many, season DVD set is scheduled to be released next month as well.
