I think I'm buying one this Sunday.  My price range is about $400, ideally including the helmet and lock but I guess I could go beyond this if possible.  I am looking for something nice enough to last hopefully the rest of my MIT career...but also secure from thieves and whatnot, and safe

I got a hybrid bike last year from Ace Wheel Works in Porter with fenders and a cargo rack for around $450. The people there were helpful.

If you're into building stuff, you could always go to MITERS and build your own bike--they've got tons of bike parts. You'd probably have to order a few, but I can't imagine it being terrible. OR you could build your own motorized scooter!
