Radio Indigo has succeeded in rocking Bangalore so far. Excellent music. Excellent RJs. No ads. Even since this started, I have been more than happy to hand over control of our Worldspace to my parents (who listen to Sai Global Harmony and Art of Living channels). How long the fun will last is the question ( Read more... )

If reliance enters the satellite radio market and base their revenue model on advertising, I am sure that all the above technological barriers will vanish in a month! They could make some non ad based channels paid.. It will be a win win situation..

The problem is there are no biggies backing the radio industry.. It is like the time when reliance/tata were not in the mobile market..

On a related note, I had expected reliance to approach the radio market through satellite beaming instead of FM. (I heard things like reliance is planning to broadcast a radio channel thru FM in bombay) The reasoning behind it is that reliance always creates market where it doesnt exist.. only a few villages in india have radio connectivity.. with satellite beaming by reliance, a new market is created..

Worldspace is barely sustaining. Google for worldspace losses.

hmmm i don't have such a high opinion of reliance! :D

problem with satellite radio is that it is difficult to receive signals in cars. and most people listen to radio in cars! so it's not such a great idea. however, yeah as you mentioned, a new rural "market" could be created with satellite radio.

and i won't be surprised if Adlabs's Big FM will play Himesbhai and his ilk. It is very unlikely that they'll offer a differentiated product.

You're right. I don't know who long it will last. But while it does, I'm getting my fill, morning-noon-and-night.

you can play satellite radio in cars. There is this funda called Sirius satellite radio in the US. pretty cool, easy to install and doesn't get in the way. Its just an addin to the existing stereo.

you can make certain channels pay and certain free and all that jazz.

All is well with Radio Indigo, except that every day they play Dire Straits and Eric Clapton. I don't think these two are the greatest axemasters;there are so many out there. But this station is much much better than others who play copied crap from Bollywood and Kannada muck.

they need to get more music. they are just playing the 2 extreme crowd pleasers : pop rock for sissies and hard hard noisy stuff for crazies. there is a spectrum they are missing out. there is only so many times i can listen to nelly and n furtado, shake your , and beyonce

and i am a girl, guys listening to them have it better or worse? dunno

plus their rajyotsava especiale is gonna make me change channels

peace!!-irathepooh
