This blog post is about a relative of mine, who, for purposes of this blog post, shall be called "Commie Uncle". That name is intentional, for he is surely a commie. Ages back, he managed to land himself a PSU job with the help of a recommendation from his cousin's wife's cousin's girlfriend's cousin's uncle. And no sooner had he got his ( Read more... )

CCW....OUCCCHHH!In just three words you summed it all up...how often is this utterly, agonizingly true!

I will comment later on the rest of the post...but for now...that touched something so deep within me, that made up my utter reluctance to go through with any "arranged marriage" thing for my daughter...thank goodness, she found someone who actually quit his job in the US to come and see, for six months, if he would like India. (he did.)

This is one of the reasons why, when we talk about our glorious Indian culture, sometimes I feel like bleughhhhhh.

i completely agree with you. I get the feeling that Indian culture used to be fairly liberal but then tightened up following islamic and brit invasions

Stop cooking, cleaning and whoring?

Her servitude is of her own making and can be of her own unmaking.

It's not that simple or black and white....but explaining why that is so will bore you....remember the financial dependence, too. And when the rut runs deep, the inertia is high, too.

I don't think it is a CCW model because such people won't be OK with their potential wife or wife sleeping around. I think you should rephrase to CCSS- Cook, Cleaner, Sex Slave model which is what such men want.

I completely agree with you regarding the terms of the contract being discussed explicitly beforehand, etc.

I watched a play yesterday by Pawan Kumar (click on his name in my post,
http://bangalore.metblogs.com/2008/07/18/the-woman-in-me-at-ranga-shankara/

to see his works) and it was intense and distubring as one man (of very rare honesty, I may add) introspects and ponders the meaning of the terms marriage and rape... that's why I came back to this post. I do agree with srblogs...in this play, too, the husband cannot bear the fact that three other men have raped his wife, and murders them.

Very talented playwright, Pawan Kumar; opens doors that many theatregoers don't want opened at all. He reminds me, in this respect, of Mahesh Dattani, who, over a decade ago, did the same thing...but who is now, alas, in Mumbai, trying to make it big in the movies....

The thread is drifting a little...but we are not yet on different pages....the page being, the model of "wife" that's in most Indian men's minds....
