For the last one year or so, I've been relying on bloggers such as Tyler Cowen for my books recommendations. Basically I read about a book on a blog, or say Marginal Revolution does a book forum on the book, and I soon get interested in the book, and go out to buy it. Well, you could get an Amazon Kindle. And hope that the books you want show up in their store.

Agreed, the initial investment is high ($359) and you don't get the book to put up on a shelf; but if you can look beyond that, most new books are available and typically come at $10, which is almost exactly the INR400 you mentioned. :)

but does that work in india? and USD 350 is steep! considering how much I read, it's way too mcuh of an investment.

How about buying a used version of the book in US and then asking a friend to bring them for you? I regularly buy all my textbooks such and they have been in very good condition - almost like new.

Used books cost atleast 1/3 to 1/2 the original price.

Instead of 2000 it will be 600-1000
