It's not cricket

I'm writing this in the innings break of the first IPL game between bangalore and calcutta. I've just witnessed what might have been one of the finest innings in limited overs cricket. Absolutely mindblowing stuff from McCullum. Yet, if at all I'm feeling something, it's irritation. Despite having watched such good cricket from this man, I feel ( Read more... )

Could it be that the Wimp has a point here...hmm...nothing for the bowlers he claims (although that did not seem to prevent 82 runs being scored in the second innings...)

Naah!! Its just sour grapes :P

Btw, its Kolkata! I won't comment on how you decide to spell Bengaluru, but misspelling your opponents name does not do much for your good loser credentials!

Aah the joys of mindless regionalism :D

i don't care how you spell or pronounce it. it's still madras, bombay and calcutta for me. damn these stupid politicians randomly changing names.

i wrote this thing between innings. and after that ball suddenly seemed to start swinging. i think it was just spectacular batting from mccullum.

andi agree that mindless regionalism rocks

the reason why i dont consider 20-20 as cricket is because it has no strategy planning. bowling well is not a strategy. strategy is when you manage resources. for bowlers, yes, there is a trategy .. they are given only 4 overs, and there are fielding restrictions etc ... but for batsmen .... there is nothing ..... 20 overs 10 wickets ... its bad .. i would reduce it to 6-7 wickets just make some strategy planning a part of the game ....

what males criket different is amount of impromptu planning that goes into a game .... and how much it effect the result of the game as opposed to other game.

tests are the best .. one dayers ... there is lot of planning .. 20-20 ... that factor is missing ... thats why its not cricket .... even in one days i would like to see pitches where 250 is challenging and 270 match winning score.

i think it has somethign to do with the conditions
if you go back to the ICC World T20, there was a fair bit of strategy involved - both in batting and bowling. if you remember, in each game, sehwag and gambhir used to just play out the "powerplays" and just build a good base. and then try go for it after that. that was because on many of those pitches slambang from ball one wasn't possible.

as for bowling strats - remember dhoni's decision to give the last over to joginder? :P

Perhaps you should have waited till the second innings got over before commenting on bowlers having no role to play? :-)

As for loyalty, I was in the stadium and there was quite a bit of it there. Yes, some people were cheering every boundary hit, but crowd did start getting worried when McCullum just went on and on. And the entire crowd erupting in joy when Ganguly was dismissed or the sighs when Kallis was dismissed by Agarkar. And this in just the first match. I think loyalty will certainly develop once the team starts winning. I am sure Eden Gardens will be solidly behind the team tomorrow, even if Ponting/McCullum is mauling RP Singh.
