1. Funny comics. 2. I typically don't have the time or energy to commit to a sequential-art story. 3. (i) Comedy. Preferably some form of satire, but not the inside joke kind I have no hope of understanding. (ii) Well-defined, lovable characters. Even bad guys can be lovable. If I can walk away from reading two or three strips and be able to describe who these people are (as in personalities, not meaningless details like "He wears funny glasses"), I would definitely be more interested in reading more. (iii) Artwork that is unique, personal and interesting. Again, Bill Watterson was a genius at this. He deliberately altered panel formats to suit his story. His winter landscapes are effectively minimalistic. Calvin has a thousand unique facial expressions, which is darn impressive considering he is a relatively simple drawing. I could go on. I'm a huge Bill Watterson fan.
