Things to do

I saw a poster for this somewhere:

Blenheim Palace Battle Proms
evening picnic concert
Saturday 28 July

Cannon and fireworks and music! I'm very tempted.

At some point, we should go to the Bavarian Beerhouse as well.

Don't mind me, just clearing out notes from my phone, in between doing the ironing!

Blenheim - we might be there... The cavalry and the Welsh certainly will be, and I might (in full kit!)

I highly recommend the Bavarian Beerhouse - they do excellent food (go for the schnitzels!)

However if you do plan on going, call them and book in advance, especially if you're in a large-ish group.

That restaurant sounds interesting.

I wonder if the Kartoffelpuffer (shouldn't that be Kartoffelnpuffer?) are anything like Reibekuchen. My attempt at those wasn't amazingly successful, and I'd like to try proper ones :)

No, Kartoffelpuffer is right. Concatenations don't use the plural. It's Apfelkuchen, too, not Äpfelkuchen, although it's made with more than just one apple.
And yeah, it's the same as Reibekuchen (which is just a different regional name for them). They are a bit tedious to make by hand (grating them on a fine grater, pressing out the water etc.) if you don't have a potato grating machine that acts as a centrifuge at the same time.

I'm confused how you end up with Orangensaft now. Or is the n more for ease of pronunciation, like the occasional s that turns up between concatenation?

I wonder if that was one of the mistakes I made - the grater being too coarse. I couldn't seem to find a temperature where the things cooked right. Although if I try making them again, I'll be finding a recipe with a tad less onion in it. :)

You know, if German spelling rules were logical, my life would be so much easier. ;o) Your suggestion sounds about right, the n is a filler.

Well, if you grate them more coarsely, you get Rösti. I guess your problem was that they were too wet. This happened to me first time i made Rösti.
If you have them sweet, i.e. with sugar and apple sauce (and that's how my family have them), there's generally no onion in the batter.

You know, I haven't had a real Schnitzel in ages (mostly because veal is hard to get in this country or I would have made them myself) but sadly, they only do pork ones or I would be tempted to brave the setting.
I'm also a bit disappointed by their beer selection to be honest. Paulaner is a bit sweet for my taste although a dark Erdinger would be nice.
