I bookmarked this when you first put it up and I'm going to get around to reading it eventually. Right now I'm looking at a lot of manga for a project for my YA class. A lot of it is foreign to me, and I'm trying to figure out why it is so popular around the world, but specifically here in the States (manga, not homosexuality).

The section "Male homosexuality in women's media" is especially relevant to the topic of manga (the key word here is yaoi), but the entire essay provides some idea of the cultural context. Slash fiction is another example of male homosexual scenarios created by and for the benefit of a straight female audience ( ... )
