Hm I guess my advice would be to focus on how cool the character is and how excited you'll be to be him. Once you have expectations about how you look, and how the costume looks, it suddenly won't feel so fun anymore. But try to focus on the experience and not be so concerned with the execution. After all, you're only just starting out.
(On second thought, I suppose I didn't have expectations when I started out because I was like 15 and immature and ended up maturing as my cosplay skills matured... but still!)

Interesting. It's certainly more popular among girls. But I never felt I was doing something that was a girl thing.
