On my Facebook last week I told about a mysterious bright light that became visible as daylight slipped away. In the interest of brevity(!) I had omitted some important details. This more detailed account may explain why I dismissed your suggestions out of hand

Are weather balloons even in use anymore? I thought all the "cool" meteorologists and folks used doppler radar, and more advanced technology. I mean, I've travelled a lot, and I have yet to see a weather balloon normally, and yet they seem to appear in the night sky, glow, and do other odd things, except for what they're *supposed* to be doing, like detecting weather. :)

The balloons are used for exact temperature readings. Some also give pressure info. The results of Doppler and such have really improved the big picture. This give a better local snapshot.
