In a series where Mordred is younger than, and contemporary with, teen Arthur can you be sure that any of the rules of myth apply? Besides, it didn't look like a proper unicorn to me. Not with those hooves and that tail.

Yeah, but it's fun to consider that Merlin hasn't put out yet (hence Arthur trying to seduce him with food, etc).
I wondered how the unicorn managed to see through that fringe, personally.
