LJ vs Dreamwidth

May 24, 2010 20:07

My automatic payment date for my paid livejournal features is coming up. I'm contemplating pretty much completely migrating to Dreamwidth and switch to a paid journal there. I like DW's business model and philosophy more. I don't like that LJ seems to log me out every 15 minutes and blitz me with an ad ( Read more... )

I've been trying to crosspost. I think it'd work better if I had paid features of on DW. We'll see how this goes.

I'm in the same predicament as you: I like DW better for a bunch of reasons, but almost all my friends use LJ. So, I keep active accounts on both sites. I make my posts on DW, but I have it set up to automatically crosspost on LJ. I read both my DW and LJ reading/friends pages, and those who crosspost as I do I follow on DW.

I wish the reading/friends page could be merged somehow. Right now I'm trying to read both and the duplication is slightly annoying.

As far as posting goes, I'm thinking I will probably buy a Dreamwidth account so that I can cross-post to more than one LJ. This is a fairly monumental step for me since I really wouldn't have ever even started with LJ if there hadn't been the free option. It's getting harder and harder to get through to read friends lists here at LJ when I'm on wi-fi on the road because of all the ads. It's not so bad when I'm on my broadband here at the office, but that's usually only once or twice a week. I did some playing around and found that LJ feature that lets you get e-mails notifying of new posts at other peoples' LJs, but I think it will be easier to simply check out LJ one or twice a week when my equipment and Internet connection can handle the ads and do posts whenever I want on DW.

Sadly, I've come to the conclusion that very, very few people on my FL will be migrating to DW, so it will be impossible to give up the LJ presence. The ads are to the point where I would if I could, though.

I recommend cross-posting.

If I ever move over there, I want to move all my LJ stuff with me, and I have no idea how to begin to move the entries other than one by one. It would be a huge pain. So I'm staying primarily here.

LJ is trying to log you out automatically? It doesn't do that for me, and even the ads don't display properly, so I haven't really minded.

I thought about this post for a while, and then realized, wait, I have filters. If I move everything over, then it will mess up my filters. Even if everything that is friends-locked becomes "viewable to me only", I will have to go and manually add people to all back entries I want them to be able to see.
