Things I would have changed: put it on a network where it could be uncensored, aim for the high standards UK Skins set (acting, music, cinematography, engaging storylines), and do completely new storylines/characters.
if the show had been even half as good as the backwards trailer in terms of everything you listed that it lacked, i think it could have worked. i'm beginning to realize it's all mtv's fault, basically. teen wolf is fugly.
Actually, this is part of the reason the show failed.
Rather than package Tea as a confident lesbian, they should have advertised her as being in doubt of her sexuality. I think the show handled Tony/Tea really badly. Like, I wouldn't have minded if it had been that Tony deluded himself into thinking Tea was 'the one' but having her go and sleep with him and do everything short of officially getting with him was just bad.
I didn't hate the show, but this aspect was a major let down. I really wish that Tea's issue was what was being implied in her trailer, that she can't commit to anyone and there's no 'we' in regards to how she sees relationships. That would have been more unique and interesting to watch.
I'm not sure if it was Elsley, MTV, or both who pushed for the confident!Tea advertisement. I have a feeling it was a mix of both of them. I guess they felt they could attract more people with promises of 'LESBIANS!!1'.
In addition to my problem above, I also didn't like Tony's portrayal overall.
He's sort of the main character and through him, we're supposed to see how the group works, why they're together, etc. In the UK series, he's manipulative and just a bastard, but we connect with him and feel for him throughout both series.
Tony in the US series was a 'bastard', but in a different way. He was kind of whiny, possessive, and continually tried to court an unobtainable girl with utmost desperation. And since the season 1 finale didn't have him get hit by a bus, I'm assuming the extent of his development would have probably been related to his obsession with Tea. Blah.
