my ~skins essay~ which is pretty embarrassing

Mar 09, 2011 20:12

I write a blog about disability issues with a focus on autism, and for the first few weeks I watched Skins my entire blog was just about how much I loved JJ. I'm trying to combine some of my various posts about his wonderfulness and also discuss what was, in my opinion, his downfall after 3x08.

It's basically a novel. It has chapters and stuff. Don' ( Read more... )

Well done, mate, well done.

I would like to express how much it would be perfect to read more analysis, reviews and commentary by our fellow Skinsfans members. I caught a bunch of interesting reflections in posts of some of us, however, most of them were usually written in a way more fit as an essay. Nevertheless, I am very pleased to see the first one and many, many thanks and kudos to the author!

I really loved reading this. I love JJ, and it always annoyed me how he got shafted to the side (both in the later episodes you mentioned and in the fandom). I feel like they were doing a really good job with his character up until JJ/Emily having sex, JJ being used as an offensive plot device, and then his relationships with everyone either disappearing or being reset. Anyway, it's just nice to see some JJ appreciation.

I was having another gay vs. disabled brain conflict re: JJ/Emily, because I am not offended by it as a lesbian, in fact I like the portrayal of Emily being so comfortable with herself that she can have sex with a guy and it doesn't make her question anything or mean that she doesn't like Naomi. But...it was totally retconned in 3x09 as being a super big deal, when it wasn't a big deal in 3x07, which meant portraying JJ badly and basically ruining Emily + JJ's friendship (plus it's kind of heterosexist, because it shouldn't matter at all to Naomily's relationship). And the writers sort of wrote themselves into a corner, because they wrote JJ's virginity as being a huge problem, and then they made him lose it to a girl who wasn't really interested in him, which doesn't really count.

tl;dr, I've switched from being really supportive of JJ/Emily sex on my first viewing, to think that it was kind of a bad writing decision or at least was handled badly afterward.

I didn't find it offense because of Emily's sexuality, but just because I didn't like JJ losing his virginity out of pity. I would've liked it better if Emily had just convinced him that it's okay to wait, or maybe if JJ had realized it on his own. I feel like the pity fuck was a bad idea to begin with, and even worse in the aftermath.

This is amazing, nothing for being embarrassed.

I love what you say about his episode (3x07) I almost cried on the final scene, one of my favorites episodes, tough I don’t like the scene with Emily in the end :/ ,while 4x06 is boring and it feels like a typical romance-comedy movie (boy meets girl, they’re together, he fucks it, and they are back again).

And also, I love your pov of Cook/Freddie/JJ friendship; I never see it in that way.
Well done.
