[Even before opening his eyes, Shion can tell that wherever he is right now is most definitely not Nezumi’s underground home, nor the correctional facility that he had been in seemingly moments before. The bright light and warmth on his face could only be from a window, and the sound of birds chirping happily nearby was almost foreign to him by ( Read more... )

Wei! Um, I'm not sure how anyone gets here, 'cause whenever they do, they're always fast asleep before they get to see how, hehehe. But you're in Mayfield now!

So it does work.

Do you happen to know where Mayfield is located? Geographically, that is.

They want us to think it's America's place, but even America says it's not his place at all. I heard that this place is Earth, but on a whole different time- ah, wait. [ filters this call before she spills any more info ] A whole different timeline! If you're from Earth, you'll get what I mean, I guess...

Of course I'm from Earth, but.... does that imply that some of the residents here aren't? [By this point, his mind would normally be in overdrive. It already is, but given the situation he's in, Shion is more focused on the bigger picture at the moment.]

What do you mean by a different timeline? Where would the split have occurred?

As far as I know, the majority of America is uninhabitable. If that's true on this "timeline", I wonder if this place is located somewhere within close proximity to No.5? Maybe then I could find a way back.

[He's nearly talking to himself by this point....]

Yes, um - Eh? Eh!? America's doing just fine! Well, he's having some problems back home, but... I'm sorry, I don't know what you're talking about, but wherever No. 5 is, it definitely isn't here. We're in Earth in the 1950s, that's true, but in this timeline, Russia and America went into an all-out war and America won it.

Ah, then everything seems to be in accordance with what I know. We're just further back into the past. That makes much more sense. Thank you, um, miss....?

Oh. [ This is his world's past? Interesting... but she shouldn't dwell on that right now. ] Ah! I'm Taiwan. What's your name?

Taiwan, then! That's a nice name.

I'm Shion. I really appreciate you taking the time to answer so many of my questions.

Aww, xiexie, Shion! It's no problem at all! There's not much to do in this town and after a few days it gets pretty boring. Well, sometimes ba things happen... But don't worry! If you make a lot of strong friends and stuff, you'll be nice and safe! And, hehe, I can put up quite a fight, you know.

[With the memories fresh in his mind, it's hard for Shion to imagine that there could be much that qualifies as worse than the things he's seen.

And though he nods along with Taiwan, his curiosity is almost strangling him.]

Have you seen or heard of anyone named Safu or Nezumi? Safu has short brown hair to her neck in a sort of boyish cut and Nezumi is a boy about my age with grey eyes and dark hair pulled up at the back of his head. Do you know if you've seen anyone that fits those descriptions?

Safu... and Nezumi? Those are weird names! Um, no, I haven't heard those names mentioned on the phone before. I'm sorry. Are they your friends?

That's right. They're irreplaceable to me.

....If we're on a different timeline, does that mean that everything that happens back in our original time stays the same?

hwamei September 23 2011, 08:40:13 UTC
That's right. We might be here now, but back on our timelines, everything is left intact. For example, Japan arrived earlier than I did, but in the time I'm from, he never left.

[For the first time since the conversation began, he sounds absolutely and completely genuine.]

Thank you so much. That's more of a relief than you realize.

[ And Taiwan can sense that. ]

Hehehe, I know. It's really convenient! I was so glad when I found out... If I ever left my people, we'd be done for!

Shion and Nezumi are Japanese names, aren't they? So you and your friends are from Japan?

Your people? You wouldn't happen to be in a position of royalty, would you?

You could say that, though I doubt it's the same Japan that you're familiar with. I'm from a city-state that lies within the boundaries of what you would consider the country of Japan.

That is, if I'm understanding you correctly.
