It had felt as though Steve had been there all night long. His back was getting stiff, and his legs were beginning to ache from walking around and around and around the perimeter. It had taken Sam and Dean longer than they would have liked to confirm that there was a ghost haunting a military base just outside Washington D.C. Then, because of their rocky history with the government, they'd been more cautious than normal, taking up even more of their time.

When they'd finally managed to track down the ghost's preferred haunting grounds, they split up, Dean to find the bones and Sam to find the actual spirit.

As the younger Winchester roamed the base, he heard a voice from the armory warehouse. Double-checking the salt rounds in his shotgun, Sam kicked open the door, leveling the gun at the woman floating several inches off the ground.

"Back up," he called to the other man, not taking his gaze off the spirit. He couldn't shoot until he was sure the guy was far enough away to avoid the blast.

Steve was happy enough to take the orders, and quickly. There wasn't time to wonder at who else was suddenly about because his hand had just gone through a woman's shoulder! That just doesn't happen! And it wasn't as if someone was on base experimenting, or playing tricks on him.

Not that he'd be surprised if they were.

As soon as Steve was clear, Sam took the shot. The salt round dissipated the spirit, leaving the two men alone in the empty warehouse.

Sam instantly tried to hide the gun, a force of habit despite knowing Steve had seen him fire it.

"You're probably wondering what just happened," he mused, giving a sheepish smile.

"Ah, yeah," Steve tried to sound confident, strong, and tired of being picked on, but his tone still shook ever so slightly, and he was half a tone higher than normal. "Look, I've been given a job to do whether I like it or not, so could you guys just lay off? Please?"
