Itchy scalp? Ah, how I love winter!

If your scalp is feeling flaky and itchy and your hair is dry as a bone, well, at least I'm not alone this winter! Here are some quick tips.

Use a moisturizing shampoo and conditioner. Look for hair care products that are specifically made for dry hair. When applying the conditioner, massage the product onto your scalp with your fingertips. Doing this will help to hydrate your scalp, stimulate oil glands and remove flakes.

Exfoliate your scalp. If you’re struggling with flakes and an itchy scalp, an exfoliating product might help. You can use a mild facial exfoliator or a product specifically designed for your scalp.

Don’t scratch the itch. Scratching your scalp can cause scratches or abrasions, leading to infection. If you have patches of extra-itchy skin, apply a small amount of hydrocortisone to the affected areas to provide itch relief and allow your scalp to heal.

Some natural remedies I use personally:

*Tea tree conditioner (used just for the scalp, not the ends). I add a drop of rosemary and lavender, really work it in and then let it sit for a bit. I'm sure you could also just add a drop of tea tree oil to your regular conditioner and do the same thing, but my regular conditioner is pricey so I like to buy cheap natural brands just for the scalp.

*Instead of a store bought exfoliator, you can use brown sugar to scrub your scalp. The best part is that it dissolves instantly and is guaranteed not to leave gritty bits in your hair (which I've had happen with certain types of facial scrubs).

*Apple cider vinegar is the absolute best thing I've done for my hair. I mix just a little bit with some warm water and pour on the ends of my hair to keep them soft. I also purchased a detangling spray from Philip B. that contains ACV, and it works wonders too.
