Wow! That Barbarin portrait is shaping up to be amazing - can't wait to see how the brass shows up against that background. You make me want to break out the colour pencils again. And I wish I'd read this before I decided to try dark paper on my latest pastel effort...I was thinking contrast with the blond hair, not considering the translucency of the pastels (hrm - Enjolras with a tan!). I think the second pic is hardly failish - you've built up some wonderful skin tones there, and the hair is lovely.
