Ouch. Those are embarrassing to even look at.

"I suppose it could be that Germany, not having the same experiences as America did, simply doesn't have the same sensitivity to blackface..."

I know I had a hard time in England explaining why "Darky Day" - where people go around in blackface - is offensive.

This article gives some links on the subject. However, while "Darky Day" is limited to that town, I have seen a number of morris dancers in the UK still using blackface.
