I know, it's frustrating sometimes. I think he's been hurt so often, that if he doesn't find a way to fight for himself, he won't feel like he's worth anything.

That's bullshit. He either belongs to his boss or not. Either his self worth is tied to what his boss thinks of him or it isn't.

But he wants to be useful to his boss, and that means being strong.

I don't think so and at what point did accepting help become a crime. Especially if he can get it from someone stronger than him.
