you're kidding me, right?

So it seems that barely six months after I had to wipe my entire hard drive and reinstall both operating systems because of a virus, I'm ... going to have to wipe my Windows partition and reinstall Windows! Of course that would be the OS which has the graphics program I just paid money for, of course it turns out with 99% certainty that I've ( Read more... )

Eight is awesome in many, many ways. I love his audios with Charley.

So far I've just listened to one of the Lucie Miller ones, and it was awesome. He's all, "People are trying to do horrible, technically fatal things to me; how very strange and ever so mildly distressing!" And there's totally a semicolon in there.

Yes. He's lovely on all counts.

Oh, the Eight audios are awesome (love the icon btw). The best are the ones with Charley imo, but McGann's so good they all work. (Try Chimes of Midnight. It's amazing).

Re: Merlin. Yes. I was just thinking while watching the new ep today that their record for that ep was particularly bad since the two poc we saw besides Gwen were a) being arrested on suspicioun of magic, and b) a druid and doomed (doomed I tell you!). I also recall them killing their one poc knight too. I mean, it was a noble death, but geez. I hope they manage to keep at least one poc character alive and non-evil before the end.

I saw the icon while browsing the maker's journal for something entirely different and was like, "HAHAHA SO TRUE." So yeah. I will let you guys know what I think of Charley. And it'll be a while before I get to Chimes of Midnight -- I was planning to listen to this stuff while I made icons, but, well -- but I was thinking that Doctor Who titles really like using the same words over and over again. I mean, quite apart from egregious abuse of "Dalek," Midnight's come up at least twice, and then there's all the Death/Invasion/Planet/Space/Time/Empire ... jeez, guys ( ... )

On the one hand, I love that Gwen is played a woman of colour. It's fascinating from the point of view of that, well, this woman who has been a servant and -- well, is of colour, I'm going to assume in the context of the story probably "moorish" -- she's going to be *Queen*. It's a pretty clear political declaration for Arthur to make in his choice of wife ( ... )

Yeah, these are all good points. It's probably not a good thing that the same term is used for "we cast actors of all races for all characters and then we pretend all the characters are the same race" and "we cast actors of all races for all characters and then we take the race of the actor into account when writing." Because the second is so much better than the first. (I think Spectacular Spider-Man has done this very smoothly, incidentally.)

I tried to work out a way Arthur or Uther could work, given that as someone from a mixed race family I have some personal investment in the topic (*g), but no, you're right -- either it would be White King Saves England or the Daily Sun would be accusing BBC of being a den of Obama lovers. Or something. Which would be kind of funny, but not in the best way.

Firstly, I'm sending you computer!sympathy. Owies.

Secondly, I assumed that something huge happened between the movie!Eight and season 1 of new Who. And that's why Nine is how he is. (I don't know everybody else seems to put McGann's Eight down. I loved him. Weirdness.)

NCIS is doing a remarkable job of keeping everybody happy. It can't go on forever but it's nice still.

Did you speak with a bad french accent when you wore the beret?
...you don't get the points if you didn't. Them's the rules.

Thank you! Miracle of miracles, resetting the network worked ... I'm running like ten thousand virus scans, but all seems to be well.

I didn't even realize that people didn't like Eight! Well, maybe because of the "zomg half-human!" thing? But c'mon, it was obvious how much better he was than the movie itself.

Next episode is called "Undercover Man," and if Tony actually GOES UNDERCOVER AGAIN I will be so thrilled I will jump up and down like a girl.

I live in French Switzerland, so that is just asking to be slapped.

Apparently Eight is considered too commercial and 'obvious'.
(I'm so not a serious Whovian.:)

Undercover!Tony to the win!!

Living in French Switzerland means that you *must* do it. Remember, it only counts if you sound like one of those Monty Python sketches.
..You may need a striped shirt too.:)

You mean, as a Doctor? I mean, the movie was a commercial gimmick, obviously, but like I said, Paul McGann brought his game to a script so craptacular he actually had to drop to his knees and scream, "NOOOOOOOO!" to the skies. (Was there lightning involved? I'm pretty sure that at the very least it was night and there was Dramatic Lighting.)

But if the complaint is that Eight himself is too commercial and obvious as a characterization of the Doctor, well ... I don't see how that applies more so than to, say, Four or Five. Or Ten, for that matter.

I know I'm preaching to the choir, I'm just saying.

I have a striped bikini, but the beret is striped and they would clash. Also, I would get cold.

Bummer about your computer! That sounds horribly frustrating.

It really is tragic that Eight never got screen time aside from the cheesetastic TV movie. He's far too good for that pile of crazy. (Plus, so sad that we're denied the pretty!) At least this situation encourages us to listen to the audios, thus focusing attention on his splendid voice. I've only listened to a few of the audios with Charley, but I need to do more. It breaks my heart to think that sweet, genteel, bubbly Eight was the incarnation of the Doctor who probably actually had to fight the Time War (of course we don't know when he regenerated, but most people's fanon assumes the end of the war).

(OMG Hi!)

Luckily, my computer issues are resolving themselves with less drama than expected. I still need to finish backing my data up, but that's way better than total reinstallation!

He really does have the most fantastic voice. And yes, I think the fact that Eight is (so far as I've been able to discern) the nicest, or one of the nicest, incarnations of the Doctor makes the Time War just that much more tragic on a personal level. I don't know how much the earlier changes in personality from Doctor to Doctor are supposed to reflect actual character development, but the progression from Eight to Nine is, well, trauma. Luckily he does seem to have healed a bit as Ten.

ETA: Also, I LOVE your icon.
