So, ah, maybe not much point in making a work tag when today was my last day of work. (This was as scheduled - my first day of class is Tuesday, and it was a summer internship.) But why do I have homework a week before classes even start? And why does it entail Second Life? The injustice, people, the injustice!

Books recently read: Mouse Guard: ( Read more... )

I had a couple of extra dollars in my pocket last week when I went to the comic store and decided to spend it on a book outside of my typical Marvel/DC scope. I narrowed it down to ‘Mouse Guard: Winter 1152' and ‘The Surreal Adventures of Edgar Allen Poo. I, being a huge Poe fan, and having not read the earlier installment/s(?) of Mouse Guard, decided on the latter. I kind of regret it now (not that Edgar Allan Poo wasn’t an enjoyable, albeit it somewhat forgettable, read) since I’ve been interested in Mouse Guard for a while and discovered that Poo was originally a webcomic and I could have read the majority of it for free. Now I’m actually kicking myself over my decision. Oh well, next time...and by then they should have restocked the first part ( ... )

That should be 'Edgar ALLAN Poo.' You would think someone who claimed to be a big fan could at least spell his name right.

There is always next time. And hey, now you have a rec!

Redwall's black-and-white sense of morality is ultimately what made me stop reading it, I think. Jacques actually claimed in an interview that he made it that way as an instructional for kids, but "what you are determines how you think, forever and ever, amen" is exactly NOT what we want our kids to learn, isn't it? Even as a late prepubescent/preteen, I knew there was something really off about that sentiment. I wanted Veil to be a good guy, darnitall.

When I was wee I read The Queen of Attolia and absolutely adored it beyond all reason as it ripped my tiny little heart out, only to *forget* the title. I recently ran across a book review of it and was like, "That's it! That's the book that I've been looking for for about half my lifetime now!"

I was very excited and there was much waving of my arms in the air, which I think might have worried my roommate a bit.

Oh, don't go making me feel old, now.

I've been hearing lots of good things about Mouse Guard and I think I'll pick it up. Where do you suggest I begin??

... The beginning? Heh. There's a hardcover out now which collects all six issues of the first series; I would go with that, or wait a few months for the softcover trade. Personally, although I'd been intending to wait for softcover (the author turned out to be doing a signing at my comic shop right around my birthday, so I got myself a gift! XD), I'm really happy with my splurge - the illustrations are really luscious and detailed; this is a comic that really benefits from the hardcover treatment.

I was introduced to The Thief by its inclusion in a box of young adult books I received from a friend at graduation, to last me until I was ready to read academic books again. ;) I was surprised how much I enjoyed it, and I think I did find The Queen of Attolia satisfying. Now I'm eager to read the next sequel! I might need to re-read the first two, though...

What's interesting about King is that it's from the perspective of a character very unfamiliar with Eugenides, so reading it without the first two novels to hand worked pretty well for me - but I think now I'm going to reread the other two.

Oh! That sounds like an interesting approach, too. Maybe I'll do that, since it doesn't require me to make it through both other books first. (I'm still trying to finish Omnivore's Dilemma, but it might be easier to motivate myself to read through a new book additionally, rather than re-read two books.)

Do it, do it! And tell me what you think.
