what exactly does treatment for a betta who has parasites entail?

Depends on what the parasites are. In this case Grendel has unidentified internal and external parasites, so he's being treated with external parasite medication, a generic antibiotic + aquarium salt to keep his immune system from succumbing to a secondary infection, and being fed food soaked in the parasite meds to get to the beasties in his gut. Also a heater cranked up, because parasites don't like heat.
