The other night, Law & Order: SVU informed me that 'stfu' means 'Shut The eFf Up'.

I had totally been working under the assuption that it meant 'stuff you'.

Seriously, I thought that for years. (And I totally prefer it; telling people to shut the eff up without adequate provocation kinda makes you an overly agressive arsehole, but a shortened form ( Read more... )

ahahahah isn't it the weirdest moment? i found out a few years back after a year or two of thinking it was a shorter version of 'stuff you' and i was like "...ooooh"

mte i've always known is my thoughts exactly. ngl, though, i always thought was like 'ugh' or 'errgh' in terms of just being onomatopoeia. shocked when i found out it meant 'not gonna lie'. i was really amused by the amount of people prefacing statements with "nnngle"

Aha, so it wasn't just me! I know, right? And when you find out, it suddenly occurs to you that a heck of a lot of people online are American (or otherwise non-british, Australian or Kiwian) and Americans don't tell people to get stuffed, so it never made sense to assume it meant that anyway.

I sort of want to start expressing my agreement with 'mate'. I wonder if it would catch on?

I've never seen 'ngl' before. It makes me think 'NRL'. WHEN OH WHEN WILL THE ACRONYM MADNESS STOP?? and when will I stop misintrepeting a global language to means things that are pretty much unique to Australia??

I thought that about stfu for a while too. I don't remember why it clicked, but all of a sudden I realised I'd been using it wrong and was quite embarrassed.

I thought that too, until like, a couple of months back. I still always think of it as "stuff you" first, then have to remember it's not.

I thought it too! And until the other day I had SO MUCH trouble with YMMV. I was stumped. COMPLETELY. I still just read it as the sound of a motorbike starting up.
