Um. Yes. This. Not that I have ever watched the Footy Show, but still. This. Your thoughts, I endorse them.
Not just that a bunch of blokes masturbating in a room together is not something they need a woman for, being on the surface a pretty bloody homoerotic thing to do, but that there may be a weird, psychosexual sort of vibe lurking in some teams. *frowns* Theres... I think Annabel Crabb was also skirting around a more complex idea about gender and masculinity which has been fairly well articulated elsewhere but would probably have ruined the punchiness of the article. It's that it's NOT ABOUT THE GIRL. It's never about the girl, in situations like this (Sam de Brito seems to have the same idea, with his 'it's not about [narrowly defined] consent' line

By the time I wrote the asterix bit I was quite tired, and really don't think I was processing either what I was reading or what I wanted to say about it particularly well. I wasn't so much trying to analyse what Annabel Crabb said, but she started a different train of thought that I was trying to figure out. Re-reading it now, yeah, I have no idea what I was trying to say, and really don't like the way it came out. I shouldn't try to think or analyse after midnight. Ugh.
The way you've put it here though - that makes sense. Thankyou for explaining it so clearly.
What bothers me about this is that, although I have respect for the NRL and do believe the higher-ups are making a concerted effort to change the collective attitude to women, is that I don't think it'll get very far. That's why I'm so impressed with The Footy Show at the moment; I know how ingrained the problems in League attitudes are, and, though one TV show making a big change in how the teams and players themselves behave might not be terribly realisic, The Footy Show

Aw... shucks. *beams* That comment made my night! I'm glad it makes some sense - I've not read terribly widely on this stuff either and so my understanding of footy culture comes entirely from personal experience (and a bit of psych study), so while what I say and see and think about it makes sense from that perspective, it's good to know it makes sense outside of it too. On top of that though, I love footy, and I really do think that the steps it's making (or, at least, the steps it's most prominant TV persona is making) are important and should be noticed.
Man, El and Cultures of Masculity would be great for understanding these things. I wonder if it's come up much in the course? It seems perfect for it.
*whispers* I cut and paste all my code attempts more complex than italics and strikes from the FAQ page, so I'd be proud of your attempt anyway, if I were you. XD
ALSO, where are you with assessment tasks at the moment? Are you free for some Merlining and possibly chicken souping on, say, Wednesday or Thursday (or even tommorrow (Tuesday) evening, but minus the soup), by any chance?
Next week's great for me. I have plenty of work but few classes and no deadlines for a while, so am pretty flexible - just let me know when you can make some time and I can probably make time too.
And ick to all essays (even the ones with strangely intriguing subjects) - Good luck!
