ok, so i know disillusionment with uni bureaucracy is an integral aspect of postgrad life, but i did at least expect to be enrolled before it started.

after waiting more than two weeks for a reply from either of the supervisors my offer letter advised me of, i sent a prompter today.  just asking some basic questions about enrollment, and also, ( Read more... )

*smishes you lots*

Could you enrol at macquarie and stay in Melbourne? i.e. have pretty much the same arrangement as you were promised, only funded by Macq instead of unimelb?

Yes, very true. I want to say: But you are one of my favourite things about Melbourne! - but of course I am not one to talk, and you must do what's best for you. If that means following the awesome supervisor away from Melb, then so be it!!

Melbourne have fucked you around in a serious way and I CANNOT BELIEVE THEIR ANSWER WAS "you should transfer."
WHUT!?! WHUT IS WRONG WITH THEM? HOW IS THAT SUPPORTING YOUR STUDENTS?!?!?!??!

*ahem*

Look, as much as I want to say "stay in Melbourne so we can become friends", everything you've said there makes sense and if you can get Macq to pony up the cash and you get the supervisor you want and get support from them . . . well, it sounds like a good idea.

(but you must come and visit Melbs lots! We will drink and eat and make merry!)

hahahahaha supporting students wot?

thing is, mac wouldn't have to pony up a cent. APAs are funded by the australian government and are totally transferable. other thing is, sam is a research fellow and at this stage only has a contract to the end of 2010, so there's no guarantee she'll be around to see me through to the end of the project. HOWEVER, mac seems to have quite a few more people with relevant research interests (more relevant than pastoralism in australian painting anyway WTF???), so even if sam isn't available, there should be someone at least in the same theoretical ball park - someone who's interested in embodiment and identity if not specifically fatness.

and yes i will be visiting melbourne and eating the foods and drinking the drinks and making the merry! but we should totally do that even if i stay!

Ah, so true about APAs - you can see that I didn't pay that much attention to all that business because I knew it wasn't the path for me.

I think community is really important for this sort of stuff but it should be possible to build that up if you stay in Melbourne - obviously it wouldn't be exactly the same but the WONDERS OF THE INTERWEBZ!

We should still do all those things!!!

as you know, i am currently ROYALLY PISSED OFF with the way melbourne uni fucks everyone around. so, yeah. actually, if you look on the bright side, this means you will be avoiding all the stupid crap-heap fucked up hypocritical behaviour of melbourne uni - they've done you a favour.

and, you know, as much as i feel a bit of selfish "noooooooo, i want to seeeeee you!" if you came down to melbs every month or so, in reality i would probably see you almost as often! and you could stay in our spare room. when it is clean of boxes.
