2 A.M. The distinct ticking of the desk clock seemed to echo within the quiescence of Inui's room. Still, the sound would drown within the senior's occasional keyboard tappings, or the clicks on his mouse. Inui didn't mind the fact that he would usually be asleep at around this hour, and simply kept working - omitting, transferring, analyzing, and re-analyzing his data. He could not afford to sleep anyway unless he arrives at a conclusion.
Would Kaidoh even forgive him?
It was enough already that his lover was avoiding him for a whole day now. He didn't mean to ditch Kaidoh like that, only to accompany Fuji on his spree to spy on Tezuka's odd behavior recently. By the look on Kaidoh's face, Inui assumed that Kaidoh might not like the idea of staying over at his house, so he chose not to force him. Unusually, Inui had learned to assume, without the proper data to sustain his theory.
But now, he would not make the same mistake again. He tried apologizing, but Kaidoh kept evading him. The kouhai would practice as far away from Inui as possible, reject his calls, and made sure that he would not be home in case Inui called. Inui had to admit that he simply cannot wait and assume - he had to establish solid ground.
The results of his data were, much to his dismay, inconclusive. Even his manual calculations did not return any valid result. Inui then grabbed the papers that were scattered in his desk, and crumpled them slowly in his hand. For a second, the thought of him overreacting crossed his mind. He was new at this relationship thing, but then again, so was Kaidoh.
Are mere assumptions already enough to break their relationship? Inui could only wish otherwise.
A new sound then filled the room - his telephone. Inui blinked hesitantly before getting up and making his way to the living room. He stared at the ringing phone. Who would call him at this hour?
"Hello?" Inui asked as soon as he picked up the phone.
"...Inui... senpai?"
Inui felt his heart skip a beat. "Kaidoh?" he hushed out, the slight raise in his voice evident as he gripped on the phone tighter. "Why are you..."
"Why are you still awake?!" Kaidoh growled at the other line.
Inui was about to speak when Kaidoh interrupted him. "It's late. Go to sleep."
The senior slightly pressed his lips together. "Listen, Kaidoh... About yesterday..."
"Forget it. Just go to sleep."
"But Kai--"
"Just do it, senpai!"
"Alright, alright," Inui finally said. "I'll go to sleep now, and you should do so too..."
The other line was silent for a while, then Kaidoh hushed out, "I will... I'll see you tomorrow."
Inui found himself smiling and settling on the armrest of their couch. "Hey Kaidoh, I love you. I really do."
Kaidoh was silent at the other line. Then, he spoke, "Ah. Good night, Inui-senpai," and hung up.
"K-Kaidoh?" Inui stammered, but Kaidoh would not call back, of course. He then led out a deep sigh before getting back to his room.
From his doorway, Inui scanned the mess that was his room - crumpled papers, scraped wood from scattered pencils, and his computer monitor filled with open applications. He thought for a while before deciding to follow what Kaidoh said. Perhaps if he did, Kaidoh would finally talk to him again. So he walked up to his computer desk, turned off the lights and crawled to bed.
Meanwhile, outside Inui's apartment, Kaidoh stood nearby. He had been looking up at Inui's room for a while, not minding the chilly evening that he had to bear. When he finally saw that Inui had turned off the lights, Kaidoh hissed - his breath forming visible fogs in front of his face - and went back home.
Kaidoh can now allow himself to sleep.
