...Because I failed at posting this the other day. Exhaustion paired with lack of personal internet is evil, yes it is. =/

Title: Spontaneous Test
Author: Mana Dairoku/
sixthwinemaidenFandom: Prince of Tennis
Character(s): Inui and Kaidoh
Rating: G
Genre: Friendship (though with these boys, it takes a lot of effort to think likewise. You get me, I know. ;D)
Words: 460
Summary: Inui and Kaidoh makes an unexpected stop.
Author's Note: Soo... I'm mentally debating if this is really a friendship fic or not. But generally speaking, it's still a piece with Inui and Kaidoh in it. XD Forgive the possibly pointless idea of this, but I needed an outlet for a personal experience that I had a few days back. I should have done what Inui did. Also, Kaidoh's love for animals is just the most adorable ever. ♥ Anyway, I shouldn't be rambling this much, even if there's an Author's Note slapped before this.
Happy reading!

It doesn’t help Kaidoh in any way that all he can do at that moment is to hold an umbrella over Inui. His eyes can only watch desperately as Inui’s hand rises and falls lightly over a struggling chest. Unable to contain his silence any longer, Kaidoh speaks up.
“How is it, senpai?!” Kaidoh asks demandingly.
Inui heaves out a sigh. “We can’t do anything about it anymore, Kaidoh. It’ll only be a matter of time,” he replies.
Inui removes his two fingers from the chest, and a pained cry cracks from a dying kitten’s mouth. The sound sends a pierce straight into Kaidoh’s heart.
“There might still be a way. Please think again…” Kaidoh utters in spite of the unpleasant lump in his throat. He can’t help feeling completely dependent on his senpai - Inui always knows more than him at anything. But, of course, Inui's knowledge has its limitations that Kaidoh should be considering.
“Kaidoh, I’m sorry… I never owned an animal before, but I know an animal when it’s about to die," is Inui's soft reply.
Kaidoh’s lips quivers as he stares at the animal. His hand falls to his side, sending the umbrella fluttering on the ground. He stoops down and places a couple of fingers on the kitten’s chest. The mist of rain is still continuous, but neither Kaidoh nor Inui pay much attention to it. Above anything else is the kitten’s cry.
“Strange - it's still crying. Normally, animals in this stage regard warmth from other living creatures,” Inui comments without making an attempt to stand up. He stays crouched beside the kitten and in front of Kaidoh. To Inui’s surprise, Kaidoh takes his hand and places it over the kitten’s chest. “O-oi, what are you doing, Kaidoh?”
The kitten’s crying stops at that instant, but it’s suffering ensues.
“I don’t want to leave it yet, senpai,” Kaidoh finally admits.
Inui looks at Kaidoh. “But Kaidoh, I have to collect-”
“You can go ahead without me.”
“But if I leave, it’ll cry again… I figured out that much.”
“Then what do you want to do, senpai?”
The question renders Inui speechless. He pushes his glasses up with a free hand and lowers his head. “I’m hypothesizing that you’d rather see it die than to leave it dying…” he then glances at Kaidoh from the corner of his eye. “No, it’s not a hypothesis, but a 97 percent chance at fact. But you don't want to watch it crying, so you are testing if I'd still leave even though I can actually alleviate a portion of its suffering.”
Kaidoh keeps his silence.
The data collector compliments that silence; he simply reaches for the upturned umbrella and holds it over their heads. Kaidoh looks at him strangely, but Inui only gives a chuckle and says, “I've done stranger things than this, Kaidoh.”
Kaidoh gradually shows a small smile. Despite the vague response of Inui, his action has been more than specific. That is enough for Kaidoh to regard.
