Gavin was still smarting for his little tiff with John a few days ago. Luckily, it wasn't showing too too bad on his face. Sure, there were some bruises and some scrapes but John totally looked worse in his opinion

"Yep," he said, making sure the book was firmly in front of his face. "I'm here."

"I haven't seen you in--" She eyed him. "What are you reading so intently?"

Maybe she could borrow it.
