Attended this week's October movie night tonight. We watched Gothica, which I hadn't seen before and enjoyed, and It's The Great Pumpkin, Charlie Brown. Hadn't seen Peanuts in years, and it does not age the most gracefully. Ah well. Now I just have to not have nightmares and not be a wuss, 'cause of all the scary/horror movies out there, ( Read more... )

I liked Gothika too, although I believe the critics savaged it ... and ironically, I loved the song from it too, even though I think Fred Durst is an ass!

Of course it IS a cover of "The Who", so it's a pretty good song to begin with. : )

LOL-ing so hard at the line "... even though I think Fred Durst is an ass!" Did you ever see Fred Durst's porn video? I haven't. If I see his porn video, I'll need to pour bleach into my eyes afterward to wash away the terrible images.

Critics are so untrustworthy. Seriously. Professional ones, anyway.

Haha the friends I watched it with last night HATE the song, groaned and ejected the disc as soon as it started. I don't think it's that bad though and I'm with you on thinking Durst is an ass. : )

Gosh, I haven't heard a song from Mr. Shawn Mullins for nearly 10 years. And I love the bluesy feel of this song "Light You Up" by Mullins and Chuck Cannon on stage. After listening to "Light You Up" in this video, I would love to see Mullins and Tom Waits do a duet together on a song. Thank you for posting this video! :D

Glad you like it! Yeah, I just knew him from "Lullaby" at first, which got way overplayed and annoyed the hell out of me, then a coworker told me he was her favorite artist a couple years later. That made me curious, but it was another year or so after that when I finally saw a new release album at the listening booth in Barnes & Noble and decided to check it out, and loved it. That was like 2000 and I've been a big fan since. He's got some really great music and good call -- he and Waits would probably make a great duet. Oh and have you heard Shawn Mullins' cover of "House of the Rising Sun"? If not, you should definitely check it out. The link takes you to a solo acoustic live performance and be sure to listen to the second half, where it gets a little more intense. Great artist.

I liked hearing "Lullaby" the first 100 times I heard it on the radio. But after the 1,000th time I heard it on the radio, I was annoyed by the song despite the fact that I respected Shawn Mullins's talented singing voice.

Ooo, me likey this live performance of "House of the Rising Sun" by Mullins! Flawless cover song. I would love to see him do a cover of "Bullet and a Target" originally by Citizen Cope.

Glad you like it!

A good friend of mine here really likes Citizen Cope and I liked the couple of songs I heard when I was hanging out with them back then, but I never looked into it any further. After hearing this and being reminded how good this guy seems to be, I think it's time I start my Citizen Cope collection. If I were to get an album, do you have any recommendations on where to start? Also, this would be a cool song for Shawn Mullins to cover. : )

Matthew Sweet, best known for his 1991 hit, "Girlfriend", is another all time favorite of mine and he, Mullins and Pete Droge got together to form a band called The Thorns several years back, releasing just one album. With Mullins and Sweet together, I thought it would have to be fantastic, but I checked it out at the local Barnes & Noble listening booth and it was just...dull. Haha sorry, just a semi-related story. Oh and the very cool video for "Girlfriend" is below. : )

Gothika is a great film, much better than I thought it would be.

Haha yeah, that is kinda lame when you think about it, but I always loved the scene where Snoopy was in a dogfight with the Red Barron, using his doghouse as a plane. : )

Aw, man, c'mon! Cappin' on the ol' skool cartoons? Harsh!

Actually, my sister-in-law said her kids won't even watch those. They don't get it, she said. Unless it looks like Pixar they're not interested. I guess I can't blame them. That was all we had when I was a kid, and it was good enough for me. Things aren't the same. Hopefully it doesn't go the way of the dinosaur, though. Someday people will start calling it "vintage graphics" and it'll be all hip. Not right now, apparently.

Haha Don't worry; I'll always have a soft spot for those old classics -- it just takes some adjusting and getting used to when you haven't seen them in over twenty years.

Yeah, I getcha. Hey, have you ever done any research on the dude that did the music for Charlie Brown? He was a noted jazz composer.

My brother was watching old TV-recorded racing footage from the 80s earlier this year and laughing at the graphics used between cuts for the newscast: "It looks like they did it with a Casio!" he said. Kinda the same the Peanuts these days, I suppose.

Actually, when I was about ten, I was taken to Western Michigan University's Miller Auditorium (the hot spot here for touring Broadway plays, etc) to see an orchestra concert of his music, although I don't remember his name. I did thoroughly enjoy it though.

Haha that racing footage sounds fantastic.
