You've Got To Be Kidding

Jan 07, 2014 21:38

I bought a new 2tb external hard drive Saturday and spent the better part of two days copying my massive music collection over from my old hard drive and I noticed it took up twice as much space on the new drive for some reason. Upon investigating, I discovered that a large chunk of the song files somehow doubled or tripled and in some cases even ( Read more... )

fail, the collection

Sigh. Oh well. It'll be fixed in about three weeks at this rate. Thanks anyway. : )

I figured it out. The duplication isn't even what took up the space. It's a Western Digital hard drive which comes recommended and gets good reviews, but it comes with something called WD SmartWare, which takes up 755 GB -- 200 GB more than my music, duplicate songs and all! WTF?

Oh, damn. D: I know there's a way of sorting iTunes by duplicates, but as for the actual files, I think it's probably just going to be manual. Best of luck - I know you've got kind of a huge collection.

Yeah, over 3,000 albums worth. Oh well. One IT friend says there are de-duplicating programs out there too, so maybe I'm not that screwed. Worst case scenario: I'll do it manually and be done in a few weeks.

As for the iTunes sorting thing, I keep reading about that and it would be useful to me 'cause that's another issue, but the steps involved don't seem to be available on my version of iTunes...is it only for the iPod/portable versions?

I don't think so - what version of iTunes are you using? I'm pretty sure they don't vary based on what devices you connect.

Sounds like iTunes bullshit...happened to me once. I suggest ripping cd's (or copying files, rather) with a different program.

I figured it out. It was indeed iTunes bullshit that duplicated my music files, but that wasn't even what was taking up all that space on the new hard drive. It's a Western Digital hard drive which comes recommended and gets good reviews, but it comes with something called WD SmartWare, which takes up 755 GB -- 200 GB more than my music, duplicate songs and all! Not a clue. You'll have to put the question to Google and see what answer pops up.

OT: Space Dandy premiered last Saturday. If you missed it/no DVR, can watch it on Funimation. Cause it's kinda of "adult", you'll need to do the free membership jazz and sign in to prove you're over 17.

Luckily, I figured it out. Part itunes fail, part my fail. :)

No, but I like the way it displays album covers. Yeah, that's seriously the biggest draw for me.
