What happened when Axl Rose rented my apartmentI came across that article this morning and it's a pretty good story, so I thought I'd share and it leads nicely into the core of this entry: a rundown and picspam of concerts I've been to in the time I was absent this year. This is sure to become a lengthy entry, so I'll hide it under the first pic ( Read more... )

Glad you've been having fun; it looks like a great occasion!

Good luck on your Metallica quest! :-)

I'm not sure I'd call it a quest yet, but thank you! :D

Someone on the radio before was talking about that Axl Rose piece - thanks for sharing it!!

Also, sigh. I would give Heaps Of Money to be able to see STP with Scott Weiland. They came around here with Chester Bennington as lead singer and I just...I couldn't, you know? It just feels wrong.

It is a bummer that you didn't get to see them with Scott, but I'd still go see them with Chester even though it's not the same and I couldn't even imagine it at first. I finally gave their EP a listen a few weeks ago and was surprised that Chester actually worked pretty well with them in my opinion, even pulling off Weiland style vocals at times - like similar enough that it's obvious that it's kind of a tribute to Weiland. That's my take, anyway.

Myles Kennedy (of Myles Kennedy & The Conspirators) is from Spokane and I went to High School with him at Mead High School. He dated one of my friends for a month or two and I wrote his high school band a song (lyrics for it at least). I think he is two years older than me but I may be wrong and he is only one? He was super shy in high school but very musical. It is cool he went so far in life.

Oh wow! Hard to imagine a successful rock star and front man like that super shy, but I guess it happens. And very cool that you wrote the lyrics for one of his songs.

First time I heard him was when I got the debut album from Alter Bridge several years ago. He's their vocalist, but I wasn't familiar with him yet. It wasn't until I saw him singing for Slash on some Glastonbury music festival footage from 2010 that he caught my attention. He seemed like such a cool, laid back bluesy front man and fit Slash perfectly. I looked him up after and was shocked to learn he was the vocalist of Alter Bridge, who I wasn't super impressed with at first.

But yeah, he's become one of my favorite front men in rock and that's a great story. Thanks for sharing.

Many actors are shy as well...I think that they become "the character" when acting so it would make sense shy musicians come alive (become "the performer") on stage.

Myles is one of those people who I went to high school that went on to be pretty successful in the musical world.

Others would be Craig Montoya from Everclear who was in my math class until he dropped out of high school midway through the semester. Next thing I knew he showed up in Everclear on Mtv.

And Joel Tipke ( http://www.joeltipke.net/) who was a year or two younger than me and ended up playing guitar for many grunge bands. he used to put me on the "guest list with "+guest") so I could get into shows his band (Inflatable Soule) played opening for, and I could get a friend in as well. Joel was a bit of a guitar prodigy and was playing guitar parts from songs he heard on the radio from a very young age and doing it at school talent shows.

Yeah, that makes sense. I was really shy as a kid and can still be a little shy at times, but being in character was always different.

Damn, Spokane was apparently quite the hotbed for music. I had no idea. I'd always assumed Montoya was from California (although I probably heard otherwise while watching Everclear's Behind The Music on VH1 years ago and just forgot).

Joel Tipke seems pretty impressive, too. Hmm do I even want to know how you got in with all these bands? ; )

No way! I was checking out Myles' ('cause ya know, we're on a first name basis) Wiki page and found out he was in Rock Star back in 2001, which I never knew (pic below). Also, he suffered from depression temporarily after being diagnose with a hearing disorder called tinnitus and has also worked with Led Zeppelin. Crazy.

HA! That's awesome! Unfortunately, I was nowhere near close enough to the stage to make out facial expressions when I saw Slayer a year and a half ago. Speaking of, I got a chuckle out of this pic when it turned up a few months ago. :)

Nice collection of concerts! Glad to see you've had some good times to go with the year, and more in store for this year too. :)

I was reminded of something, having read your description of STP plus a couple of comments above. Have I ever mentioned Owl to you? They're a - well, I believe a three-piece band with the singer being the bassist from The Cult. So Chris Wyse does vocals and bass for Owl. The thing is I hear a bit of Scott in his voice but musically Owl also sounds like STP in parts (other parts remind me of Layne Staley and AiC). I can't remember said songs for each sound but here are a couple of songs that they have done.

Pusher
The Right Thing
Violent Center
Destroyer Kinks Cover

I don't know; you might have mentioned them before, but I don't remember for sure. Regardless, I just watched all four videos in their entirety. The Scott Weiland resemblance jumped out at me immediately in "Pusher", which I wasn't sure I liked at first, but it grew on me a bits. I really like "The Right Thing" and head more AIC in that one. I think I heard more AIC in "Violent Center", which I'm also not sure I like, as well and the Weiland style was back in "Destroyer" along with some AIC similarities. And I think Chris Wyse needs to work on his screen presence.

Thanks for sharing those. :)

I always enjoy sharing. ;) And yeah, watching these videos - after having seen him twice, different years mind you, he does come across with having a better stage presence then video presence. Mind you I'm citing this from last month. Or maybe he's just developed more presence in general after doing these videos. Hard to know!

Oh yeah, I'm sure he's better on stage. It's funny to see how awkward even the most natural stage performers can be on camera. : )
