Ooh, exciting!! "hal·low vt 1. to make somebody or something holy 2. to have great respect or reverence for somebody or something"
o.O Ok, that's what I thought it meant. Eg. Hallowed ground. But I don't get how a hallow is deathly, especially since its a verb, not a noun. Oh well.
Oh, wait, I just looked it up; the book is "Deathly Hollows," not "Deathly Hallows." Ok, that makes much more sense.
I expect it will have something to do with Godric's Hollow. A hollow is a small area that's been shaped out, or 'hollowed' out. Like an owl might live in the hollow of a tree.
Um, no it's not. Yahoo News (at least) says it is, but on JKR's own site and every HP site (Lexicon, FAP, Mugglenet) it's Hallows. So I think I believe that ;)
Well, I just saw the Yahoo News and didn't bother to look it up elsewhere. If Rowling's site says 'hallows,' yes, I think I believe that. Yahoo will probably get a lot of flack for misprinting it, though. :D
I had to look hallows too. I got the feeling it could mean something like saints, mostly because my dictionary includes Hallowmas - November 1st, All Saints Day. Right after Halloween, which gives some ideas for the book ending.
And I just realized deathly isn't the same as deadly, but that may not be very significant.
And I just realized deathly isn't the same as deadly, but that may not be very significant. Thanks for pointing that out - I was thinking deadly-meaning, as well! Now it's... a bit easier to understand what the name means (meh, who am I kidding, that's because a newspaper printed a one possible translation for that :P)
Halloween sounds cool, but I think it's too soon to be significant in a way like someone suggested that Voldy would die then - everything happens in June, at the end of schoolyear :P That's not saying that something important can't happen at Halloween - it's quite likely, since every year something happens on Halloween...
Well, it could be the Halloween after. If Harry really isn't going to school next year, it doesn't make much sense to have the final battle in June. I just think it would be more significant to destroy Voldemort in Halloween.
Funny thing: 3 diferent portuguese newspapers presented 3 different translations. the 3 can refer to completely different things, which just makes me a bit confused.
Haha, our dad asked us at breakfast earlier if we knew the title of the seventh book and we said no. And he gleefully exclaimed that he knew the title before us, and he was so pleased with himself, hahaha.
Deathly Hallows... sounds promising, doesn't it? haha. :D We have so many theories, but we honestly have no clue. and we don't want it spoiled, really. so much better to read the seventh book without being spoiled. :D
I read it in the free newspaper, but they translated it to Dutch. It sounded really odd. Although that might be because they just translated it wrong. I think they got 'deathly' wrong.
It sounds plausible that it has something to do with Inferi.. or how about maybe something with the Veil? Maybe the Veil does something, like hallowing things?
Finnish traslation was a bit odd, mostly because it left no interpretation for hallows, and gave it a meaning of "saints". Which is true and the most "direct" translation, but somehow I think there won't be saints in HP books :P
My favourite theory of the moment is that it has something to do with either the Founders or the Horcruxes made of their stuff!

Theorizing about the title is soooo much fun, even though I think we don't have a change at figuring it out :P
