(Note: I talk about movie Jadewarrior here, but I don't suppose enough for it to need a spoiler-cut. More like general stuff...)
I saw Jadewarrior yesterday, and I liked it very much. It's certainly something you've never seen before: a Finnish kung-fu movie that happens partly in modern Finland and partly in ancient China and mixes Chinese and

I adore my icon as well, not least because Oscar Wilde is a genius and wilshirist made them to me ;) And yours is so cool as well - to my dismay, I don't have any H/D icons! I should remedy that...

Re: national epics: *blank expression* I don't think we actually have one. o_o (I've read about the Kalevala, though. ^^ ) But I suppose that can't be true. I mean... why wouldn't we have a national epic? I Googled 'national epos' + 'Nederland', and funnily only Dutch websites about Finland, haha. I asked my parents, and they couldn't really think of a national epic either. Except maybe a story about some guy who put his finger in a hole (gap?) in a dike (...which sounds very disturbing in English, lol). Although that was apparently originally an American legend. (Link.) Whatever.
I think this (or last) week the 'Dutch canon' was made public. It's very historically dubious, though... (lol, the newspapers are still talking about it.)

*sighs* I meant, 'and found, funnily enough, only blah blah blah' *face palm*

Well, that's the best sign of slashing! ;)

Oh :D Any idea why Kaleva is so famous there, then? I know for sure that there's a national epic or something similar in France and Germany, at least... Maybe nationalism wasn't so popular in Netherlands? Because at least ours was born (or collected) because of that.
I think I've heard of about that legend you mentioned about the dike. Hmm. Can't remember where, though...

I've heard so many good things about Jadewarrior. I need to see it. Yeah, right. I still haven't seen V for Vendetta.
Kalevala is really cool. We read little snippets of it in school but I don't remember much. We don't have anything like that. I mean, there are a bunch of texts and authors that are considered important, but nothing that feels even remotely related to Kalevala or Beowulf. :/

You don't care much about movies, do you? Seriously, V is something you REALLY have to see. And Jadewarrior is a plus.
At school we were told that practically every country has an equivalent of Kalevala, but apparently that's not the case... But the stories in Kalevala are really great. And I love Gallela's art of it!

I do care about movies. I just haven't had any money for the last 6 months which means no movies. I am going to see it though. I'm sure it will love it :)
I don't think every country has something like Kalevala. I'm sure there were similar stories but no one ever bothered to write them down. Or maybe they were lost. But we don't have anything like that.

I have a weak spot for martial arts movies.
National epic-story-thingies...
Well, if you mean stories that everyone knows...
Well, there's the story of Anne Frank, but that isn't fiction.
You have the guy with his finger in the dyke, which cracks me up for no reason.
And there's this 'classic' (I read about it in the Donald Duck years ago xDDD) in which nothing happens except a boy gets a pair of iceskates, or something.
*shrugs* I think we rely on Disney for epic stories that everyone knows.
And yes, apparently Dutch history is 'canon' now O.o
but is there an option for me to ship non-canonically?

Um, no. I mean national epics? As in... we have this one "poem book" that is considered national epic, and in France it's Chanson du Roland and in Greece Ilias and Odyssey.
What is this canon history thing?
