Is there any mainstream movie with a gay protagonist where hatred is not an essential feature of the movie?

The only one i can think of is "The Birdcage." Homophobia is only a relatively minor feature of that movie. But this movie is a mixed bag, i could see how one might think of it as relying on negative stereotypes.

Hmm... i can think of a few other movies, but i doubt any of them could be considered mainstream.

"America" hates gays? The only place that treats them better is the Netherlands.

Anti-gay is, in any event, reality. And if the depiction of it was pandering to anti-gay sentiment I would not expect the anti-gays to be so dramatically repulsive (as they universally are). I would say it's more pandering to gays' victim complex.
