Since the finale, I've found myself making a list of little things in the Avatar narrative that I appreciate because I like them or don't see them enough. ( In no particular order. )
Great post! So much love for most of these things too! ♥
Why no older female warriors, like in the White Lotus? I had some ideas on that, but suffice to say it's weird that it's missing given how strong females are in the younger set. I wondered about that, too. Where's your discussion with jlh? Will you write more thoughts on that later?
I was thinking of Aunt Wu and Crazy Herbalist Lady at the time, but even there they don't compare to any of the old guy role models it's true. And none of them are warriors (the closest to a older female warrior we get is Jun, hum, and random female fire soldiers in S3 I guess). And of course there's Lu and Lo (not sure of their name) which are an interesting case. And Gran Gran with the sudden marriage to Pakku even though she'd ran away from him in the first place (which, okay, I could imagine them working their difference in some way and be kinda sweet but without any explanation is rather odd).

I think it could be argued that there was at least one older female warrior: Hama. Well, she was a warrior in her youth anyway: standing up against the Fire Nation as they systematically attacked the Water Tribe. But as time passed, it is probably more accurate to describe her as 'fighter', the shadow side of 'warrior'.
I think it is also interesting to see that she's is Hero, Victim, and Predator. To bring Zuko into the mix (because I love him!), he too was Victim, Predator and Hero. Iroh (I love him too!) was Predator, Hero, Victim... then back to Hero! Yeah!!!
I hadn't thought of it that way but yeah! It really interests me the way that so many of the male characters have these male role models, but when Katara meets a female guide she turns out to be dark.
Though I don't think that's saying anything about women or anything. It's also fitting for Katara's own personality, as we see. She understands the kind of rage Hama felt and blood-bending did come somewhat naturally to her. Not that she liked to do it, exactly, but it wasn't a surprise that she could do it when she needed to and wound up at least once doing it to punish someone.
Aunt Wu could have been a secret... well, airbender makes the most sense personality wise, but maybe an awesome fan fighter, or crazy herbalist lady could have been an archer or something.

We all are one of these at one time or another.

Maybe the Crones have their own order: the White O'Keefe.
