I spend most of the evening writing porn and the thing I wind up finishing is entirely worksafe. Go fig. This was a joy, because Reeve is no end of fun to write, and I have a (not-so-)secret love of backstory
( Read more... )
Oh, yay for this! I love your Reeve to bits, the way he's balancing responsible Reeve Tuesti with troublemaking Cait Sith, and the way his wryness really works. And I'm impressed that you can write a story in which he interacts solely with my two least-favorite party members from the game, and have me like them all.
And on a technical note, I really like that Vincent's backstory is in present tense, and the present-time stuff is in past. It has a neat sense of what's immediate.
Thank you! Reeve is such a delight, especially when he's struggling against the impulsive Cait Sith side. (And he works surprisingly well with both Yuffie and Vincent -- as I mentioned above, Reeve-as-I-write-him seems to be determined to drag Vincent into the world of [comparatively] normal, well-adjusted people whether he likes it or not.)
Reeve is just fantastic in this and now I want to see him talk with Vincent more. I also like the way that Vincent has personality; there's something so... little boy-ish, I guess, about his "And she used to be very good at distracting people so I could shoot them." line. Coupled with the other "shoot things" remark. He just enjoys it so much!
Thank you! I've always had a sneaking suspicion that part of the reason Vincent does the whole swirl-cape, stand-on-tall-object-in-front-of-moon, blow-monsters-away routine is just that he likes it. ;)
You know, I usually don't care much about Yuffie, Reeve and Vincent, but the three of them rock my socks in this fic. ♥ Reeve was great; and I like that Vincent did not act like a Goth Zombie of Doom and Rememberance.
I keep wondering what kind of nuisance Tala was. XDD and her hair down probably looked like mine after ballet class. XD;
Yeah, there's only so much you can get out of Goth Zombie of Doom and Remembrance (great phrase, by the way!) and I like exploring what else there must be to his personality, under the broooooooood exterior.
(I'm tempted to write a rather self-indulgent set of drabbles about Tala and Vincent's other former teammates. They came to life for me, writing this.)
"I thought you said that stuff wasn't anything like 'actual food from actual Wutai,'" he added, shucking off his jacket.
"It isn't." She fished a deep-fried glob of something bathed in translucent red sauce out of the box with her chopsticks. "I didn't say it wasn't good, just that it wasn't authentic." I have had this exact conversation before so many times with exactly that kind of food -- porkchickenwhat? -- so this made me smile. :)
"The part of him that was Reeve Tuesti / The part of him that was Cait Sith" was a very nice touch too, the way that you phrased it. It's hard sometimes to reconcile the two faces together, even knowing that Cait's a puppet.
Ditto on the 'blah blah sin penance,' line.
I'm really fond of how you've done Reeve in this. I don't read many fics on him because I'm not sure what will sound exactly right -- a balance of humor and seriousness and stuffed cats -- but this fits perfectly with how I like him. Also, he and Vincent have the best banter.

:D Me too -- which is why I couldn't resist sticking it in.
Reeve is such a delight, I think because it's challenging to reconcile the man and the robot cat. I think I like him because he doesn't take himself entirely seriously (his avatar was a cat riding around on a moogle; how could he?) -- which is why I think he clicks with Vincent, who has a tendency to take himself too seriously.
If you like the broody pretty vampire admire-my-pain thing." I read this and all I could think of was that monologue from the first season of Angel, when Spike's making fun of him. It's such a great line.
where all the old Shinra files had been accessioned himself. Accessioned is kind of an odd word here; I was expecting something more like "archived".
The part of him that was Reeve Tuesti, head of the W.R.O. and all-around responsible human being said, You don't need that information, and it's really not your business.
The part of him that was Cait Sith was really, really curious about the stranger with Vincent's face he'd seen on the recording.
He wondered if he should be concerned about how often the Cait Sith impulses won out. - This is wonderful, and really captures the duality of Cait Sith vs. Reeve. I love it.
it made Vincent's mouth twitch in what looked like the beginning of a consideration of an attempt at a smile. - This is great XD So Vincent.
I think Reeve likes to think he has the robot-cat-slash-devil-on-his-shoulder confined to part of his personality, but the Cait Sith influence is more insidious than he would rather admit. ;)
(You're quite right about 'accessioned' -- my only excuse is that I've been working on a record-management project at work, and the word lodged in my brain. XD)
Believe me, I understand. I work in benefits, and when you mentioned the copy of the company health policy, I started wondering what kind of plan it was and whether it would be carve-out provisions when he reached Medicare age.
I want to know whether Vincent has had retirement benefits earning interest for the last thirty years. It could explain why he can afford to swan around Being Mysterious all the time. ;)

"Blah blah sin blah blah penance blah blah demons blah blah."
Oh, Cait Sith, you win at life. ^^
