Gouldian Finch - Erythrura gouldiae

Gouldian finches are one of Australias most prized small birds. In 1844 a wildlife expert named John Gould first described the bird as a rainbow finch, which then went on to become an international celebrity.

It's astonishing how nature painted these finches in all the colours of the rainbow. It's also peculiar that there are clear boundaries between the colours. I see this bird for the first time in my life and I am happy to know it.

Most astonishingly the bird is almost completely invisible when in the bush, completely camouflaged in plain sight and in bright colours.

The reason for sighting it today, was that it was picking up straw to build a nest nearby. The bird was very predictable and I was able to take a photograph within a few meters away. As close as 2 meters away.

I just hope that sharing this small bird with the rest of the world brings just as much joy as it did for our early adventurers in the Kimberley.

It is such a unique bird.

As the bird can camouflage so well, it is quite unique, indeed. Let alone its unmatched colouration.
